February 28th, 2015 - Kates Motorsports Travel to El Paso Speedway Park
1The United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) took the team to El Paso Speedway Park (El Paso, Texas) on Thursday night for the opening round of the 2nd Annual Icebreaker.

Thirty entries were on hand for the first of three days at 3/8 mile oval, all chasing the $2,000 top prize. Kates started and finished second in his heat race, locking him into the ninth starting spot on the feature grid. During the course of the 30-lap main event, Ben advanced four positions to a solid top five performance, finishing fifth behind race winner, Austin Arneson, Cade Dillard, Dereck Ramirez, and Jake Gallardo.

Twenty-eight Open Wheel Modifieds registered Friday night's program, which boosted a $3,000 winner's check. A fourth place finish in his heat race locked Ben into the eleventh starting position for the 40-lap finale. Kates battles around mid-pack throughout the duration of the main event before crossing the finish line in twelfth.

The 2nd Annual Icebreaker at El Paso Speedway Park drew to a close on Saturday night with the $4,000-to-win finale. As twenty-eight entries converged on the oval, Kates raced to a fifth place finish in his heat race, earning him the fourteenth starting spot for the 50-lap main event. Ben moved forward and was running fifth when he was involved in a wreck that forced him to restart from the tail of the field. Kates charged through the pack, recovering to a solid seventh place finish in the final rundown.

Kates is currently third in the latest USMTS Rookie of the Year standings. Complete results from the event and the latest series' standings are available at www.USMTS.com

February 21st, 2015 - USMTS Invades Royal Purple Raceway
1Thursday evening found the team pitted at Royal Purple Raceway (Baytown, Texas) for the opening round of another tripleheader with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS).

The $2,000-to-win program drew a field of fifty-three entries to the oval, and a sixth to second run in heat race action earned Ben a spot in the redraw for the 30-lap main event. He received the third starting position on the feature grid. Kates went on to register a solid fifth place finish in the finale behind race winner and fellow Rookie of the Year contender, Austin Arneson, Jason Hughes, Clyde Dunn Jr., and Jesse Sobbing.

Friday night saw the winner's check increasing to $3,000 as fifty-five Open Wheel Modified registered for battle. Struggles in heat race action left Ben short of locking into the 40-lap feature, sending him to a b-main. Despite starting deep in his b-main, Kates charged to a sixth place finish. However, only the top four finishers advanced to the main event, ending his night early.

The weekend was set to close on Saturday night with a $4,000-to-win finale at Royal Purple Raceway. Unfortunately, the event was washed out by rain.

Kates is currently fourth in the latest Rookie of the Year standings. Complete results from the event and the latest series' standings are available at www.USMTS.com

Kates started and finished second in his preliminary heat race, which would earn him the tenth starting position on the feature grid. The 30-lapper would see Ben racing amongst the top ten for much of the event before registering a solid seventh place finish at the checkered flag. Ron Skinner Photo

Friday night’s USMTS program saw the winner's check increasing to $3,000 as thirty-four entries filled the pit area. A third place finish in his heat race positioned Kates twelfth in passing points, which would in-turn lock him into the twelfth starting spot for the 35-lap main event. Ben was racing around mid-pack in the feature when a mechanical failure sidelined him just three-laps shy of the checkered flag. He was credited with a seventeenth place finish in the final rundown.

Saturday evening's finale boosted a $4,000 top prize for USMTS competitors, and thirty-three Open Wheel Modifieds registered for battle. Unfortunately, a mechanical failure would once again bring team's night to a disappointing early end.
