March 30th, 2014 - Kates Concludes Busy Weekend with Pair of Top Fives
1After more than a month away from the track, the Kates Motorsports team returned to action over the weekend.

The weekend began on Thursday evening at RPM Speedway (Hays, Kansas) in a Test-N-Tune session for the annual Sunflower Classic. When action got underway on Friday night 35 entries were on hand, and Kates picked up the win in his heat race after starting fifth, which sent him to the redraw for main event. Ben drew the pole position for the feature and battled at the front of the back for much of the event before registering a fourth place finish in the final rundown.

A field of thirty-nine entries converged on the 3/8 mile high-banked oval on Saturday night for Round #2 of the annual Sunflower Classic. Kates started the night off with a ninth to fourth run in his heat race, locking him into the thirteenth starting spot for the feature. Despite starting mid-pack in the main event, Ben suffered mechanical issues on his #23k and retired early to a 24th place finish. Complete results from the Sunflower Classic are available at

The weekend came to a close as the team traveled to WaKeeney Speedway (WayKeeney, Kansas) on Sunday evening. A group of thirty-five competitors were registered for battle and Kates started the night off strong, picking up the win in his heat race after starting third. Ben drew the seventh starting spot on the grid for the main event and advanced to a fourth place finish during the course of the feature. Full results from the event are available at
